Prep Time: 25min Preheat Oven: 350°F Cook Time: 15-`18min

The Recipe:

1 cup flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

1/2 tsp salt

1/3 cup sugar

1 egg

1/2 cup buttermilk

3 Tbsp unsalted butter

1 1/2 tsp vanilla

The Whiskey Caramel:

1 cup white sugar

1/2 - 1 cup water

5 Tbsp unsalted butter

1/2 cup whipping cream

2 - 3 Tbsp whiskey

1 - 2 pinches of salt

Cooking Instructions:

The Doughnuts:

In a medium size bowl, mix together all dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and sugar). In a separate small bowl, melt the butter and whisk in the rest of the ingredients (egg, buttermilk, and vanilla). Fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients with either a spatula or spoon until just combined.

Using a tablespoon, scoop batter into a well greased mini muffin pan (careful not to overfill). This recipe will make about 16-18 mini muffins. Bake for about 15-18 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean or the doughnut bounces back if you lightly press the top with your index finger.

The Caramel:

Follow this recipe for your caramel. To enjoy, drizzle over your doughnut holes or dunk one by one depending on your preference.

P.S. This recipe for this caramel sauce is also quite delicious in a number of other chocolatey desserts or drizzled over ice cream and cookies.
